Once you have decided to see Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, the next question is always the same: what does each day actually look like? Knowing the shape of the trip — how far you drive, what you see when, where the early starts fall — makes it far easier to picture and to plan around. This guide lays out a representative day-by-day itinerary for the 4, 5 and 6-day versions of the route. The Classic Golden Triangle Route at a Glance

The three cities form a rough triangle across northern India, which is where the name comes from. Delhi and Agra sit about 230 kilometres apart (three and a half to four hours by road), Agra and Jaipur about 240 kilometres (four to five hours, usually with a stop at the Abhaneri step-well or Fatehpur Sikri), and Jaipur back to Delhi around 280 kilometres (five to six hours). On a private tour the drives are broken up with sightseeing and meal stops, but expect some long, full days, especially on the shorter itineraries. The order almost always runs Delhi first, then Agra, then Jaipur, because it keeps the drives efficient and saves Jaipur’s forts and palaces for last, before the return drive to Delhi. The 4-Day Golden Triangle Itinerary, Day by Day

Four days (three nights) is the most popular length for a first trip. It covers the headline sights, but the days are full: Day 1 combines Delhi sightseeing with the drive to Agra, and Day 2 starts at dawn. A typical plan runs like this:

• Day 1 — Delhi, then Agra. Your guide meets you in Delhi for Old Delhi (the Jama Masjid, a cycle-rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk and past the Red Fort) and New Delhi (the Qutub Minar, the Lotus Temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and India Gate), then you drive to Agra in the afternoon (about 3.5 to 4 hours).
• Day 2 — Agra to Jaipur. The Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort after breakfast, then the drive to Jaipur (about 5 hours) with a stop at the Abhaneri step-well.
• Day 3 — Jaipur. A full day in the Pink City: Amber Fort, the Jal Mahal, Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar.
• Day 4 — Jaipur to Delhi. A relaxed breakfast, then the drive back to Delhi (about 5 to 6 hours) for your departure. There is no sightseeing on this day, and we recommend booking an evening flight, ideally after about 9 pm, to leave a safe buffer for traffic.

The 5-Day Itinerary: What the Extra Day Adds

A fifth day (four nights) adds an arrival day in Delhi, so you can land, rest and start sightseeing fresh the next morning. It is the natural choice if you are flying in from the US or Europe and want time to recover from the journey. The 5-day Golden Triangle tour runs like this:

• Day 1 — Arrive in Delhi. Your guide meets you and transfers you to your hotel, with the evening free to rest.
• Day 2 — Delhi, then Agra. Old and New Delhi sightseeing, then the afternoon drive to Agra (about 3.5 to 4 hours).
• Day 3 — Agra to Jaipur. The Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort, then the drive to Jaipur (about 5 hours) via the Abhaneri step-well.
• Day 4 — Jaipur. A full day of sightseeing: Amber Fort, the Panna Meena Ka Kund step-well, Hawa Mahal, the Jal Mahal and the City Palace.
• Day 5 — Jaipur to Delhi. A relaxed breakfast, then the drive back to Delhi (about 5 to 6 hours) for your departure. As with the 4-day trip, an evening flight is the safest choice.

The 6-Day Itinerary: The Fullest Version

Six days (five nights) is the most relaxed take on the classic route. It adds both an arrival day and a full, unhurried day in Delhi, and gives Agra its own afternoon so the Taj Mahal is not squeezed in before a long drive. The 6-day Golden Triangle tour runs like this:

• Day 1 — Arrive in Delhi. Your guide meets you and transfers you to your hotel.
• Day 2 — Delhi. A full day across Old and New Delhi at an unhurried pace.
• Day 3 — Delhi to Agra. Drive to Agra (about 3.5 to 4 hours), then visit the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, with an optional sunset view from Mehtab Bagh.
• Day 4 — Agra to Jaipur. An optional sunrise Taj visit, then the drive to Jaipur (about 4.5 hours) via Fatehpur Sikri, with the evening free.
• Day 5 — Jaipur. A full day: Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar.
• Day 6 — Jaipur to Delhi. A relaxed morning for a last wander or some shopping, then the drive back to Delhi (about 5 to 5.5 hours) in time for your onward flight.

Beyond six days, most travellers stop adding cities to the core loop and instead add an extension such as a Ranthambore tiger safari or Varanasi.
